The 2020 Digital Pulse report shows there will be increased demand for technology workers in the ACT, but what do you have to do to stand out from the crowd?

The 2020 Digital Pulse report forecasts that technology employment in the ACT will continue to be positive with an expected average annual growth rate of 5.5 percent expected between 2019 and 2025.  This equates to 10,130 additional workers.  This is the highest rate expected for all states and territories and is significantly higher than the Australian employment forecast of 3.1 percent over the same period.

So how are you preparing to stand out from the crowd and be employment ready?

Ultimately, it doesn’t just come down to your qualification.  That will get your foot in the door, but it is your experience in applying technical knowledge and demonstrated enterprise skills (also known as soft or professional skills) that will see you competitive in an interview situation.

As student members, you have access to a range of ACS member products, including the ACS Career Platform.  Here you can access Career Advice which can be browsed by industry sector.  Here you can find out what type of roles technology practitioners have in these sectors as well as the hiring process and tips on how to prepare for interviews.  Have a browse as there is a lot of information and advice on this platform, including job advertisements.

Also, it is also important to think about how you are applying the knowledge you have learned in preparation for applications.  Have a look to at mySFIA and at the SFIA framework to start understanding the core skills.  SFIA (Skills Framework for the Information Age) is an internationally recognized framework which can be a ticket to take you wherever you want to go around the globe.  By looking at the language used in SFIA, it will help you to frame your experiences and CV to impress potential employers.
