ACS Canberra Monthly Wrap Up - April 2025

Welcome to the April 2025 wrap-up from your CBR ACS branch, highlighting the key activities and events that brought our community together and showcasing our shared achievements and memorable moments.

Canberra Branch: Embedding responsibility at the core of AI development

On 29 April, ACS Canberra was proud to co-host the workshop “Build Responsible AI into Your AI Projects” in collaboration with AI CoLab Alliance—an initiative supported by the APS Capability Reinvestment Fund to foster cross-sector collaboration and codesign in emerging technologies.

Led by the insightful Eric Nguyen, this interactive session brought together professionals from across sectors to explore how to embed Responsible AI principles into real-world projects from the ground up.

  • The interactive role-play session was a standout, offering participants a hands-on way to apply and reflect on the concepts shared earlier in the day.
  • There was strong appreciation for the emphasis on human factors — recognizing the diverse stakeholders affected by AI systems, beyond technical roles.
  • We discussed the real-world impacts and consequences of AI, looking past KPIs and statistics to focus on how systems affect people and society.
  • Participants also highlighted the strategic benefits of adopting Responsible AI early, starting from the MVP stage — not just to meet compliance, but to create lasting value, build trust, and stay ahead of evolving expectations.
  • Responsible AI isn’t just about how AI is built or launched — it’s about how it works in the real world, day in and day out. It’s about AI in operation, not just in action. Making real progress requires teams to work together across functions and move beyond silos, especially when navigating complex policies and assurance frameworks.
