Southern Cross University has recently launched an innovative project aimed at advancing Australia's transition to a smart circular economy, powered by Artificial Intelligence.

This project, funded by a $730,000 grant from the CSIRO’s Next Generation Graduates Program, aims to develop skills and tools for creating a smart circular economy in Australia, particularly in regional areas. Student opportunities include four PhD scholarships valued at $42,483 per year for 3.5 years, and six Honours scholarships valued at $10,000 over one year.

About those opportunities:

AI and Fintech for a Smart Economy

CSENS is a purpose-driven fintech application using tokenisation to reward sustainable choices, driving circular economic adoption. In partnership with Southern Cross University, students will apply AI to develop tools like ‘Envirosocial’ impact metrics, ESG reward systems, and real-time sustainability scoring. This is a unique opportunity to help power everyday transactions into measurable environmental and social benefits, compounding regenerative effects for local and global impact.

AI for Advanced Waste Management

Revolve Your World is transforming waste with circular systems that reinvest in people, place, and planet. Their mission is simple: to design, build, and operate circular economy systems that support Australian communities. In partnership with Southern Cross University, students will utilise AI and Machine Learning to develop image recognition capabilities to identify waste stream contamination and waste stream types and develop machine learning and AI to communicate with robotics, allowing improvements in waste stream sorting methodology.

This initiative presents a unique opportunity for students to collaborate on cutting-edge projects that will shape the future of sustainable practices in Australia.
