Scaling New Heights: Meet Emma Huffam CP, Business Technologist
Some IT professionals take their work to new heights, literally. Emma Huffam CP, Business Technologist, High Altitude Adventurer, and ACS NSW Member, helps businesses thrive by applying technology that works for them. From programming to IT management, Emma has seen it all, and now focuses on supporting small businesses navigating complex tech challenges. Combining her love for adventure with tech, she even created a website to document her high-altitude treks, merging passion and expertise in unique ways.

1. What area of IT do you specialise in? How does your role quietly keep your organisation running smoothly?
Business Technology. I like to help businesses thrive by applying technology that works for them. Having worked in large companies, I now enjoy applying my experience to help small businesses, who often don’t have the capacity or knowledge to get across technology aspects. I’ve worked in many different roles from programming to IT management and now I’ve come full circle and enjoy working on websites. I also managed to combine my passion for high altitude trekking with technology by creating a website (www.projectbase8000.com)
2. What is one IT myth you wish you could debunk to the rest of the world?
IT people aren’t just geeks, they often have a very broad view across how a business operates because they need to know how everything fits together.
3. What’s one IT win you’re proud of that most people wouldn’t know happened behind the scenes? What’s a moment where your expertise saved the day?
I helped a small business create a Business Continuity Plan which they were very glad to have in place, when a year later the Covid-19 pandemic hit and they were easily able to switch to working remotely.
4. Which qualities / skills make a great IT professional?
Ability to think creatively as well as logically to solve problems and to understand the business goal that needs to be achieved, not just the IT goal. A sense of humour is essential.
5. Who is your IT hero (tech, system, robot or person)?
The Jetsons - my all time favourite cartoon which inspired a generation to imagine what the future would be like. Still waiting for the flying cars though.
IT Professionals Day 2025 celebrates the vital contributions of IT experts who keep systems secure, reliable, and innovative. Often working behind the scenes, they are the unsung heroes ensuring business continuity, digital progress, and user support. The day recognises their expertise, resilience, and the critical role they play in society.
