The following pieces of advice came from the ACS Career Toolkit Series of webinars, where we bring in industry experts to discuss different aspects of entering the workforce, from interviews to personal branding. These webinars are run once a month and are aimed at emerging professionals - although the lessons are relevant for anyone looking to elevate their career!
1. LinkedIn unlocked - A guide for emerging tech professionals: Human Resources Specialist Leeanne Mason recommends a plain or blurred background, filling the frame and ensuring a well-lit background when choosing a profile picture for your LinkedIn.
2. Creating experience through volunteering: Student Ambassador at Study Melbourne Purvang Dave found that volunteering helped him improve his public speaking and communication skills – making professional networking and presentations easier!
3. Resume secrets from industry insiders: ACS Branch Manager – Tasmania Stuart Brinsmead told us how adding your membership of ACS to your resume could help show prospective employers how engaged you are with the tech industry.
4. Building your confidence - from student to professional: Geoff Augutis, Education and Government Solutions - Owner, Queensland Computers Pty Ltd, spoke about how presenting himself authentically, rather than aiming for a highly formal style of dress and manner, helped him find his place in the industry rather than being an inferior version of someone else.
5. Interview mastery - tips and tricks for success: Director of Technology Recruitment at Rec4Tech, Dean Ellis, when asked about interviewees who were facing a question they didn’t know the answer to, told us that what he is looking for in that moment is how you deal with pressure – to stay calm, to not lie about your knowledge and to think about where you would go to seek the knowledge you required to solve the problem.
