Brimbank Tech School girls in STEM: It Takes a Community

Brimbank Tech School expected a conversation about STEM subjects - instead, the audience led us straight to community and connection.

Our Schools Lead, Catherine Newington, was asked to facilitate a session on Women in STEM. Catherine started by comparing VCE STEM subject completions in Victoria and the audience discussed some really interesting stats, especially around the male and female ratio of subjects like chemistry, physics and psychology.

We then moved on to look at the newest version of the Digital Pulse and discussed the gender gap in the tech sector as well as other STEM areas. The session focused on sharing programs and teaching resources to help and support students.

Brimbank Tech School created an infographic based on session. The left is the assumptions Brimbank made about the session and the right shows feedback from the audience. What's interesting about this poster is the conversation centred around people and the importance of community and belonging in helping support students to pursue STEM subjects at school.
